8 out of 10 people believe that the future of the automotive industry will be electric

Much has been discussed about the future of urban mobility and, in particular, the automotive sector and the question is whether cars powered by fossil fuels will survive? Will these be replaced by newer, greener solutions, such as hybrid or electric cars? Will the automotive industry lose all its economic importance in the medium / long term?

Observer Cetelem Automobile 2021 sought to understand where the future of the automotive sector will go and the Portuguese have no doubts: 82% answered that the electric vehicle is the future of the industry, a number above the European average (73%) and the world average ( 77%). Brazil (91%), Poland (87%) and Turkey (87%) are the countries that most believe in this solution and, on the other hand, Belgium (55%), Germany (56%) and France (62%) the least convinced.

The faith in the electric car as an industry savior is also measured by the car manufacturers' investment plan in hybrid and electric vehicles, which has been increasing from year to year, and is expected to continue.

Is it, therefore, an impossible divorce between industry and consumers? The numbers point to it, but to ensure that there is no divorce, there is a demand on the part of consumers that the cars of the future bear very little resemblance to today's cars. We aim to make them more economical and ultra-technological, more sustainable and with greater autonomy.


The economic and market analyzes, as well as the projections, were carried out in partnership with the study and consulting company C-Ways, specialized in anticipation marketing.

Quantitative fieldwork was conducted by Harris Interactive from September 2 to 11, 2020 in 15 countries: South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, China, Spain, United States of America, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland , Portugal, United Kingdom and Turkey.

In total, 10,000 people were interviewed online (CAWI collection method), aged between 18 and 65 years old, representing each country. The sample's representativeness is ensured by the quota method (sex, age). 500 people were interviewed in each country, except in France where 3,000 interviews were conducted.
