The President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, said Wednesday that the 17 agreements signed between Portugal and China will allow to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. On the last day of the official visit to Portugal, Xi Jinping said that both countries are in a "historic moment", which will allow them to explore together other international markets.
"I have just had a friendly and fruitful meeting with the Portuguese prime minister and we have exchanged views on bilateral relations and other issues of common interest, reaching broad consensus," said Xi Jinping, in a joint conference with the first minister at the Queluz National Palace. "We have signed a series of important documents aimed at cooperation and understanding regarding the 'One Track, One Route' initiative."
Xi Jinping said that with this visit to Portugal, relations between Portugal and China "are strengthened", with the expansion of areas of cooperation between the two countries. "We are going to explore third-party markets together" in areas such as economics, commerce, culture, education, tourism, science, technology, sport and the media.
"The bilateral relationship is in its best historical moment. On this 40th birthday [das relações diplomáticas], we will deepen and elevate our global strategic partnership to a new level, "said the Chinese leader. "We will maintain the trend of frequent high-level visits and enhance exchanges at political and among peoples level, raising the level of mutual trust."
This is the second day of the Chinese president's official visit to Portugal. This morning, Xi Jinping was welcomed by the President of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, before departing for the National Palace of Queluz, for the signing of agreements with the Prime Minister, António Costa. This Tuesday, the leader of China was welcomed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
This is the first visit of a Chinese head of state to Portugal since October 2010, when then Chinese President Hu Jintao came to promote a strategic partnership between Portugal and China. Xi Jinping celebrates the 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and increase the stake in the purchase of stakes in Portuguese companies, with the signing of 19 agreements.
