As part of the program to support social solidarity institutions, the Albergaria-a-Velha City Council awarded an annual subsidy of 127,500 euros to 11 IPSS – Private Social Solidarity Institutions – of the municipality.
Annual financial support for IPSS has a ceiling per institution of € 14,000 and a minimum of € 8,000. The IPSS to benefit from the annual financial support are the Helping Hand Humanitarian Association, the D. Teresa Childhood Association, the Albergaria-a-Velha APPACDM, the Alquerubim Social Solidarity Association, the Cediara – Ribeira Elderly Day Center de Fráguas, the Parish Social Center of Angeja, the Parish Social Center of St. Eulalia de Valmaior, the Parish Social Center of S. Vicente da Branca, the Helena de Albuquerque Quadros Nursery Foundation, the Brotherhood of the Mercy of Albergaria-a- Old and the Probranca.
Catarina Mendes, councilor for social action, said “it is a great satisfaction to have a cohesive and truly supportive social network in Albergaria-a-Velha”. The mayor stressed that the intervention of IPSS in society goes beyond what is stipulated by the Central State and that, although the support of the municipality can not meet "all needs", is a way to "minimize some gaps left by the guardianship".
For his part, António Loureiro, mayor, highlighted the “quality and complementarity” work of the institutions, stating that without them, the municipality would not be able to provide the same service to the community. At the end of his speech, he left the challenge for the IPSS to develop a better collaborative relationship, valuing each other's work.
