Algarve accordionist represents Portugal in China - Jornal diariOnline Southern Region


Young Algarve accordionist Pedro Ivan Gonçalves was selected to represent Portugal at the 72nd World Accordion World Cup, which will take place in Shenzhen, China, from August 12 to 17, Mito Algarvio announced.

In China, the 18-year-old musician from Moncarapacho, Olhão, and a student of Professor Nelson Conceição, will compete in the rank of Senior Virtuoso.

"Pedro Ivan Gonçalves already has some experience in major competitions, where he has stood out with relevant awards," said in a statement to Mito Algarvio – Association of Accordionists of the Algarve.

At the 24th National Trophy / 5th International Accordion Competition “City of Alcobaça”, held last May, Pedro Ivan Gonçalves won the 1st prize in the categories of senior varieté, concert soloist and varieté orchestra.

The Moncarapacho accordionist was also present at the 71st Accordion World Cup last year in Kunas, Lithuania, reaching 6th place in the virtuous junior category. João Palma, born in Loulé and also a student of Nelson Conceição, became world champion in this competition.

“Pedro Ivan's participation in the 72nd World Cup is another testament to the skills of the teachers and students we have in the Algarve regarding the execution of this musical instrument,” said João Pereira, president of Mito, in a press release.
