Algarve registers greater year-on-year increase in unemployment in September with 157.5%

According to data released this Tuesday by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), at the end of September, 410,174 unemployed were registered in the employment services of the continent and autonomous regions, with the Algarve region in year-on-year terms. the one with the highest rise in unemployment: 157.5%, according to a news report by Agência Lusa cited in SIC Notícias Online.

The number of unemployed registered in employment centers increased by 36.1% in September in year-on-year terms and 0.2% compared to August, so according to the IEFP, at the end of September, they were registered in the employment services of the continent and autonomous regions, 410,174 unemployed, a number that represents 74% of a total of 553,928 job applications. The total number of unemployed registered in the country was higher than that recorded in the same month of 2019 (more 108,892 or 36.1%) and compared to the previous month (more 843 or 0.2%).

Contributing to the increase in registered unemployment, compared to the same month of 2019, according to the IEFP, all groups contributed, with emphasis on women, adults aged 25 years and over, those registered for less than one year, those looking for new job and those with secondary education.

At the regional level, in September, registered unemployment increased in most regions, with the exception of the Azores, with homologous increases, the most pronounced, being seen in the Algarve region, with the number of unemployed firing up in homologous terms. (157.5%).

IEFP data show that, since March, the month of the beginning of the state of emergency due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Algarve is the region with the most pronounced homologous increases in unemployment, while in the opposite field is the region of Azores, with a 1.2% drop in unemployment.

Regarding the economic activity of origin of unemployment, of the 352,732 unemployed who, at the end of September, were registered as candidates for new employment, in the employment services of the continent, 72.7% had worked in activities of the services sector, with emphasis on real estate, administrative and support services activities (28.9%), 20.8% were from the secondary sector, with particular emphasis on construction (6.2%). The agricultural sector was responsible for 3.8% of the unemployed.

Unemployment thus increased in the three sectors of economic activity compared to the same month of 2019, with greater expression in the services sector (44.7%).

Unfulfilled job offers, at the end of September 2020, totaled 14,398, in employment services across the country, an annual reduction (of 4,528 or 23.9%) and a monthly increase (of 822 or 6.1% ) of available offers.
