An Algarve team won the CAST Virtual Hackathon, a European competition for innovative and disruptive solutions in the field of tourism, with a project to create technological solutions to minimize the impact of Covid-19 in the sector and enhance new business alternatives.
The winner, among the eight final candidates, was the project "Algarve Safe Tourism", presented by the team made up of Daniel Guerreiro, of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), Jorge Cabaço, of the Algarve Strategic Accelerator, Miguel Fernandes ( president of Algarve Evolution and founder of Dengun) and Vanessa Nascimento (vice president of Algarve Evolution), who developed a solution to facilitate tourist demand, based on advanced technologies (blockchain and data collection) and geolocation.
The Algarve had a significant presence, with ten people actively involved in the event, divided into two teams, "the only Portuguese participants in CAST Virtual Hackathon", highlights CCDR / Algarve, in a statement.
For three days, the two Algarve teams, representing the Digital Innovation Hub of the Algarve (IHL), powered by the Algarve STP (Systems and Technology Partnership), actively contributed, in a marathon, without interruption, in implementing solutions for two challenges that showed during the Covid-19 pandemic: to develop technological solutions to minimize the economic impacts in the area of tourism and to propose new business ideas to make the sector more sustainable globally.
The teams brought together elements from the public administration and companies from the Algarve, with the support of members from Algarve Evolution (AE), Algarve Tech Hub (ATH), Algarve STP, CCDR Algarve and the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).
In addition to the winners, Edgard Marcondes (Let’s Go World), Francesco Berrettini (Algarve STP, DIH), Luís Segura (RTA), Raquel Melo (Inboundware), Raquel Ponte (Turbine Kreuzberg PT) and Tiago Fernandes (Thinkerdots Technologies) also participated.
CAST (Creative Accelerator for Sustainable Tourism) is a collaborative project funded by the European Union, with the aim of developing a network of incubators, accelerators and technological startups, SMEs and financiers, with the aim of forming a European community committed to the promotion and knowledge sharing, the use of technology and collaboration across borders, for a more sustainable tourism sector.
The projects were presented on July 3, before a jury composed by Margot Décory (Booking.com), Joan Borràs (Eurecat), Juliane Schulze (Media Deals), Panis Pieri (YourGrowth Media), Francisco Fonseca (SBI Consultant) and Brian Marrinan (Journey Partners).
The winners will be promoted in the European Union media and will have access to international events to present the project to investors and companies, carried out by CAST (Creative Accelerator for Sustainable Tourism) and the EBN Innovation Network.
