Lisbon, May 21, 2019 (Lusa) – The president of the Parish Council of Misericórdia, in Lisbon, considers the balance of five years of video surveillance in Bairro Alto to be "very positive," and wishes to see the system at Cais do Sodré, Bica and Miradouro of Santa Catarina.

"The balance is clearly positive and I want video surveillance to extend to other sites in the territory of the parish, namely Cais do Sobre, Bica and Miradouro de Santa Catarina, because video surveillance in Bairro Alto allowed to increase the security feeling of who lives there, who visits and who works there, "said Carla Madeira.

Speaking to Lusa, the mayor stressed that the presence of video surveillance cameras – installed in May 2014 – is a factor "delusional deterrent" in the area, where restaurants and bars are concentrated.

"And I think it is not by chance that the problems that we have at the moment in the Miradouro of Santa Catarina and in the zone of Bica and Cais de Sodré are due to the fact that there is no videovigilance there," he acknowledged.

Carla Madeira explained that currently in Bairro Alto there are no "problems of drug trafficking and delinquency" as there are in other areas adjacent to the neighborhood.

"With video surveillance, there are a number of behaviors that are not taken. See you there [Bairro Alto] a number of kids trying to sell bayonet or flour, there is, but it's different to have the problem of selling drugs like at Marechal Saldanha Street "on the other side of the Calhariz, he said.

Although Rua da Rosa in Bairro Alto and Rua Marechal Saldanha in Alto da Bica are separated only by the Calhariz, the difference in terms of problems and delinquency is great, according to the mayor.

The Miradouro de Santa Catariana, said, suffers nowadays with the drug traffic.

"The sense of security that we live in Rua da Rosa has nothing to do with what we experienced in Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo or Rua Marechal Saldanha, and we are talking about a distance of half a dozen meters. When I go up Rua da Rosa, I feel safer than when I went down Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, "he said.

According to Carla Madeira, the information that comes from the PSP is that "it has been possible to identify some situations of violence", if the aggression occurs with a camera.

The mayor also recalled the crime against Alcindo Monteiro, which occurred in 1995 in Bairro Alto, "a murder at a time when there were very serious problems in the neighborhood that ceased to exist."

"It has not naturally become a perfect, peaceful area, of course it continues to have problems, but that is why I advocate video surveillance in areas where there is greater night pressure," he said.
