Ending the month of August, ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal counted the data and states that in the period from January to August 2020, 110,764 new vehicles were put into circulation, which represented a year-on-year decrease of 41.2 percent .
By categories and types of vehicles, ACAP observes that in August 2020, 12,417 new passenger cars were registered in Portugal, that is, 0.1 percent less than in the same month of the previous year. In the eight months of 2020, passenger car registrations totaled 92,474 units, which translated into a negative variation of 42 percent compared to the same period in 2019.
As for the light goods market, in August 2020 it registered an equally unfavorable evolution, having fallen by 40.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, standing at 1,960 registered units. In accumulated terms, in the period from January to August 2020, the market reached 16,111 units, which represented a decrease of 36.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
With regard to the heavy vehicle market, which includes types of passengers and goods, in the eighth month of the year there was a drop of 7.2 percent in relation to the same month of the previous year, having been sold 285 vehicles in this category. From January to August 2020 enrollments totaled 2,179 units, which represented a 39.5 percent drop in the market compared to the same period in 2019.
