The court sentenced Begum Khaleda Zia to seven years in prison and fined her one million takas (about 10,320 euros), providing for an extra jail sentence if she did not pay the fine, prosecuting attorney Mosharraf Hossain Kajol .

The former governor had already been sentenced in February to five years in prison for corruption and misconduct.

Earlier this month, a Bangladeshi court sentenced 19 people to death and 19 others to life imprisonment for a 14-year-old attack on a political demonstration by the then opposition leader and now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, has been sentenced to life in prison.

The rivalry between Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia has shaped Bangladesh's politics for the last quarter century.
