The defense of Académica has shown attributes in the 2020/2021 season. In the 15 games already played in the 2nd League (two more to finish the first round of the competition), the students conceded just eight goals, a record that allows the Coimbra team to be the least defended defense of the competition.
An even more significant fact is that, in seven rounds of the 15 of the 2nd League, Rui Borges's team did not allow any goal to the opponent. This was the case for receptions to Estoril and Mafra and for trips to the strongholds of Ac. Viseu, Varzim, Cova da Piedade, Vilafranquense and Arouca.
In the eight games that they did away from Coimbra for the championship, Briosa did not concede goals in five challenges.
Looking at the other formations, only the leader Estoril (has five more points than Briosa) approaches the defensive record of academists. The Estorilista team has conceded nine goals and is the second least defeated defense. Feirense and Arouca, with 14 goals conceded, have the 3rd best defensive record.
At the beginning of the 2020/2021 season, Académica's coach, Rui Borges, always defended that if the team didn't concede goals they would be closer to winning. The truth is that the students followed up on this idea of the coach and the defense has given, despite various setbacks (injuries and suspensions), several signs of fiber and safety.
Four goals conceded at home and four away
At the Cidade de Coimbra Stadium, which received seven challenges from Briosa in the 2nd League this season, Feirense, Penafiel, Sp. Covilhã and Casa Pia managed to beat goalkeeper Mika. Out of doors, only Vizela, FC Porto B and Desp. Chaves (two goals), beat the academy defense. Briosa's numbers at home and in games as a visitor are also similar: four goals conceded in each of the conditions.
In addition to boasting the least defended defense, Briosa has in the forward Bouldini the best scorer of the 2nd League (nine goals). In the offensive chapter, the students, who have won six consecutive matches, scored 19 goals in 15 games. The record leaves Briosa out of the top5 of the attacks with the most goals scored. In this nuance, Estoril, with 27 goals, has the most concrete attack.
Interestingly, the second attack with the most goals is that of Benfica B. The red youths, who are in 10th place with 17 points, scored 25 goals in the 2nd League. This means that, in the next round, at Caixa Futebol Campus, the second most concrete attack of the competition and the least defended defense of the competition will be face to face. The departure is scheduled for 16:00 on Saturday.
