BE defends intensification of the fight against invasive exotic species of the Portuguese forest – The Economic Journal

The Parliamentary Group of the Left Bloc (BE) presented yesterday in the Assembly of the Republic a draft resolution in which it recommends to the Government the intensification of the fight against invasive alien species. In question are the acacias, hams, pampas, canavial and ailanto. "These species have found in the vast territories devastated by the fires of the last years conditions very favorable to their proliferation even more uncontrolled," warn the bloquistas in the draft resolution.

"The forest system occupies about 35% of the national territory (3.15 million hectares), either alone or as part of agro-silvo-pastoral spaces. At the moment, the forest species with the largest area are eucalyptus, brave pine and cork oak, representing about 72% of the forested area, "they begin by contextualizing. "The patrimonial value of the forest results from its multiple valences. In addition to the production of wood, the forest contributes to the sequestration of CO2, to soil fixation, to the maintenance of under cover, to infiltration and filtration of water, to the maintenance and diversity of the fauna and to the landscape.

"In these circumstances, all threats to the forest system must be addressed. The most serious – aggravated by accelerating climate change – is perhaps the scourge of fires, "they continue. "The continuing proliferation of invasive alien species, such as acacias and hacosa, which now cover vast areas, including protected areas, is also very disturbing."

"On the other hand, pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) is invading vast areas without active management, at a great speed and with difficult recovery. And neither the riparian zones of the forest domain escape the invasion. There, the cane field (Arundo Donax), an invading woody, competes aggressively with forest riparian species such as ash, alder, and willow. Another invader with high expression in these domains is the Ailanto (Ailanthus altissima). These species found in the vast territories devastated by the fires of the last years conditions very favorable to their proliferation even more uncontrolled ", they emphasize.

In the draft resolution, the bloquistas deputies recommended to the Government the implementation of 10 measures:

  1. "Urgently publish the results of the latest National Forest Inventory,
in order to identify the size of the problems and the areas of greatest incidence
    of invasive alien species.
  2. Develop and implement a containment and eradication plan for these species, with
conversion of the areas they occupy, to native species.
  3. Develop and implement a specific plan for the eradication of exotic riverine
river erosion that these exotic species potentiate.
  4. Increase support for scientific research on new processes in your
    eradication.
  5. Increase the diffusion among owners and forest managers of good
practices to be adopted for this purpose and in each specific case.
  6. Increase awareness and control of nurseries, where often
enter invasive species, such as ornamental.
  7. Open new applications under the PDR2020, with procedures
simplified financial support for small producers with a view to
    eradication of invasive species.
  8. Adopt biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of invasive species
in new regions as a result of climate change.
  9. Create rapid response measures to monitor and eradicate new species
exotic species that can become invasive due to climate change.
  10. Adopt the obligation of the entities managing public lands, including those that
the roads, eradicate the plant species
    invasive trees and shrubs ".
