The city of Lagos will host the Volta ao Algarve by Bike, a race that will make its 47th edition this year, with the support of the municipality since 2005.
Initially scheduled for February, the organization decided, in the face of the pandemic, to postpone the competition to the month of May (from 5 to 9). The departure of the 1st Stage, of 189.5 km cycling between Lagos and Portimão, will therefore take place on the 5th of May, in Lagos, next to the Municipal Sports Complex, a place that will be closed to the public and that was chosen with the purpose of avoiding human agglomeration, as foreseen in the Contingency Plan elaborated so that this sports competition takes place in the best health safety conditions.
As it is a modality that, according to the municipality, “arouses the interest of the Portuguese public and which, due to its high competitive level, attracts the attention of the media, helping to project the region as a territory that offers the conditions for the realization of great events. sporting events and also as a destination to visit », the Lagos council decided to renew its sponsorship of the Volta ao Algarve, giving the Portuguese Cycling Federation, for the organization of this 47th edition, a subsidy of twenty thousand euros.
