Attention users who come across an application with the suggestive name “Whats App Update V2.0” and it is nothing more than malware that is circulating online as a WhatsApp update. The most distracted may not even notice their identical logo, but with the colors changed to shades of yellow and gray. Malware, as reported by O Globo, is of Brazilian origin and gives access to user data on Android devices.
This malware is based on a remote access tool (RAT), giving hackers full control of infected devices. The fake application was discovered by Kaspersky in January and was presented to the public this week during the Latin American Security Conference in Argentina.
The Brazilian publication states that BRata, as it was christened for short (Brazilian RAT for Android), targets Android users from Brazil, but malware has the potential to be used anywhere in the world. This malware has been spread through notifications of infected websites, as well as WhatsApp's own messages, SMS, and even advertising placed on websites linked to Android apps download. The fake WhatsApp will have already been posted to the Google Play store, with at least 10,000 downloads.
According to O Globo, infected smartphones give full access to the system, allowing you to read and send messages, get photos, videos, website history, device location data, as well as trigger the camera and microphone, among other features. On the other hand, installed applications are also at the mercy of hackers, meaning that you can exchange credentials for email, social networking and other services. And in case of catching bank apps, there is even the possibility of making transactions.
Kaspersky researchers recommend users to distrust the name of applications, to verify the company that makes them available, and above all to download only from trusted stores such as Google Play and the App Store. On the other hand, never open links sent by sources you don't know, and whenever possible, keep the application up to date, but never with one called “Update Whats App V2.0”…
