Not even in February 2012, in the midst of an international financial crisis, with a historic decline of 52.3%, did the market fall as much in a single month as in March (-56.6%) and in April 2020 (- 84.6%), advances the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) in a statement.
In April 2020, 3,803 motor vehicles were registered by the legal representatives of the brand operating in Portugal, that is, 84.6 percent less than in the same month of the previous year.
In the period from January to April 2020, 56,744 new vehicles were put into circulation, representing a year-on-year decrease of 39.8 percent.
By categories and types of vehicles, it was observed that in the fourth month of 2020 2,749 new passenger cars were registered in Portugal, that is, 87 percent less than in the same month of the previous year. In the first four months of the year, passenger car registrations totaled 48,031 units, which translated into a negative variation of 40.4 percent compared to the same period in 2019.
The light goods market registered an unfavorable evolution in April 2020, having decreased by 69.9 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, to 948 registered units. In cumulative terms, in the period from January to April 2020, the market reached 7,584 units, which represented a decrease of 36.2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
Regarding the heavy vehicle market, which includes types of passengers and goods, in the fourth month of 2020 there was a drop of 72.7 percent in relation to the same month of the previous year, having been sold 106 vehicles this category. From January to April 2020 enrollments totaled 1,129 units, which also represented a 38.6 percent drop in the market compared to the same period in 2019.
