The Castro Marim City Council defended today the suspension of tolls on the Via do Infante (A22) while the rehabilitation works of the Guadiana International Bridge, which should have been completed about a year ago.
“The municipality of Castro Marim calls on the government to suspend the Via do Infante tolls while the Guadiana International Bridge refurbishment works, as a measure of elementary justice for Castro Marim and the Algarve in general,” points out the Castro local authority. in a statement.
Since June 2017, the Guadiana International Bridge has been undergoing rehabilitation works, with completion initially scheduled for November 2018.
This deadline "has been largely exceeded and a new phase has now been launched, which is expected to last more than a year," said the executive led by Francisco Amaral.
Through this new phase of the work, the Infrastructures of Portugal referred to the Castro Marim City Council, for information, the new traffic constraints, which result in the circulation of cars in a single lane in each direction.
“This is a situation that leaves us very worried, because it actually results in a new bottleneck to add to the one that was already caused by the payment of tolls on Via do Infante. It is a context that will have serious consequences for tourism, economic activity and mobility in this intercity space, but also for the Algarve region, as this is one of the main entry points of the tourism sector ”, stressed the executive of Castro Marim.
“After the delays in passing the board, will still be who enters the country forced to a forced diversion to pay tolls,” protests the executive of Francisco Amaral.
The Castro Marim City Council sent the letter to AMAL, RTA and CCDR to take their position accordingly.
