Champions League Champions League: Champions League Final

The performance of the Champions League final on 1 June in Madrid is already triggering hotel prices for those days in the Spanish capital.

The race is already being felt since last Tuesday, May 7, when Liverpool, after an impressive recovery defeated at home, Anfield Road, Barcelona 4-0, sealing the presence in the final of the maximum test of football for clubs in the European continent.

The next day, another English club, Tottenham, made another turnaround and made it to the final at the Metropolitan stadium (Wanda Estádio), belonging to Atletico Madrid, having defeated Ajax in Amsterdam.

Liverpool and Tottenham fans are expected to have 34,000 fans this weekend as UEFA has allocated 17,000 tickets to each club's supporters, who are due to go on sale in the coming days.

More than four thousand tickets for this decisive final were on the UEFA website.

UEFA has also booked 25,000 tickets for its commitments.

It is recalled that the Metropolitan Stadium has capacity for 63,500 people, reason why the Spanish capital should be invaded by many more thousands of fans who will not be able to see the game live.

According to a report by the online newspaper Cinco Días published today, prices in the Spanish capital and other accommodation units could increase by 10 times the rates normally charged.

The 'Cinco Días' states that after a consultation with Trivago, a travel and tourist accommodation portal, prices for Madrid hotels for the nights of May 31 and June 1 are currently at a minimum price of 1,300 euros per night for a double room.

As most Madrid hotels are only allowing the reservation for two nights for these dates, the bills already go at 2,600 euros for two nights. And the trend is to rise the closer we get to the date of this year's Champions League final.

According to Cinco Días, analyzed five of the main hotel chains operating in Madrid (NH, Meliá, Vincci, Eurostars and Ibis), "the average price increase over the weekend compared to the same month of June 900% and, in concrete cases, it reaches 1,000% ".

"The ceiling on the price in these four companies is assumed by the NH Paseo del Prado unit, which only has [quartos] available from 6.200 euros per night, 12,400 at the weekend. Also striking is the fact that the Tryp Alameda hotel, very close to both Barajas airport and the final stadium, with a price per night of 1,275 euros, against 96 [euros] which will cost a few days later, "says 'Cinco Días'.

Despite these prices, hotel occupancy rates in Madrid will be very high in the days ahead of the Champions League final.

According to another specialized portal, booking.com, the occupancy rate of the housing it sells on its platform in relation to the city of Madrid was already set at 97%.

In the previous Champions League final in the Spanish capital, which took place at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in 2009, the occupancy rate of Madrid hotels, according to a Trivago study.

The euphoria of British supporters is also impacting the offer of flights between the UK and Madrid. Last Friday, May 10, it was already impossible to get flights for those dates from the UK to Madrid for less than 700 euros.

Iberia and other airlines are already considering reinforcing the offer of scheduled flights from London and other English cities to the Spanish capital.

The Champions League final is the second event in world football, being only surpassed by a World Championship final of the sport king.

Several studies indicate that this Champions League final could generate a positive economic impact of more than 50 million euros for Madrid.
