Cinema of Carlos Conceição in retrospective in Curtas Vila do Conde - Current events

Director Carlos Conceição will have some retrospective films in July at the Curtas Vila do Conde festival, among which the feature film "Serpentário" was announced today.

"Appointed as one of the most interesting young European directors, Carlos Conceição explores in his films an elegant, romantic, baroque and subversive style", says Curtas Vila do Conde in a statement.

Alongside American filmmaker Todd Solondz, Carlos Conceição will be "the director in focus" at the festival, with the exhibition of three short films and the first feature film, which will debut for the Portuguese public after having integrated the festival in February of Berlin.

At the time, Carlos Conceição explained to Lusa that "Serpentário" tells of the trip of "a boy who wanders through a post-catastrophe African landscape, in search of his mother's ghost", a work that is again very autobiographical.

"I always work from a personal point of view and the degree of metaphor changes. Most of the time I'm talking about a certain emotion or feeling, but the film is about something completely different," he said.

Carlos Conceição was born and lived in Angola until he was 21 years old. It is in Lubango that the mother continues to reside and to where he travels, at least once a year. It has a "very close and direct" relationship with the country, he said.

In addition to "Serpentário", Curtas Vila do Conde will also show the short films "Bad Bunny", "O inferno" and an unpublished and upcoming version of "Versailles".

Carlos Conceição, who is finishing the feature film "Adeus King Kong", again with actor João Arrais, will also have a carte blanche from the festival to choose films "that dialogue with his career and his work."

Among Carlos Conceição's choices are Carl Dreyer's "Thorvaldsen" (1949), Jorgen Leth's "Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger" (1982) and Chris Marker's "Cat Listening To Music" (1990).

The director will be at the festival to present the films and participate in a conversation with João Rui Guerra da Mata and João Pedro Rodrigues.

The 27th Curtas Vila do Conde will run from 6 to 14 July.
