Competition promotes water efficiency in schools in the Algarve

Portuguese Environment Agency initiative to be presented on Monday

The competition "Water Efficiency at School" will mobilize the Algarve school communities, in partnership with the municipalities, for the need to monitor their water consumption and promote best practices for its efficient use.

On Monday, 22, the day on which World Water Day is celebrated, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) promotes the launch of the 1st edition of the contest, in partnership with ADENE – Energy Agency, AMAL – Community Intermunicipal do Algarve, Águas do Algarve, Universidade do Algarve and Directorate of Services for the Algarve Region of the Directorate-General for School Establishments.

During the launch session, which will take place online from 2:30 pm, the contest rules will be presented and the project and future perspectives will be discussed.

A tougher future makes it urgent to set goals

“The most recent climate projections for the Algarve region foresee an increase in the frequency and severity of drought periods, with impacts in terms of the quantity and quality of water resources, so it is urgent and determinant that goals and time horizons are established. water efficiency for the main uses ”, says the competition organization.

For APA, the school must “function as a“ laboratory ”of good practices at the infrastructural (e.g. networks, devices, equipment) and behavioral levels that allow it to leverage other dynamics and attitudes”.

The projects must be implemented in the academic year 2021/2022, in school clusters, non-grouped schools and professional schools providing basic and secondary education.

Schools and their respective municipalities can submit their projects to the competition until June 5, 2021, and the registration must be made one month before, through a digital platform to be made available in due course.

Proposals must identify measures they want to see implemented

The project proposal to be presented must contain the guidelines for the implementation of the project, identifying the measures that are intended to be implemented and their justification taking into account the current situation in the school and the expected results.

The evaluation of the projects submitted to tender will take into account “the clarity in the presentation of the project and the consistency of the proposed objectives, in view of the actions carried out and to be carried out, the potential social impact and the pedagogical quality, innovation and creativity in the use of the best practices available for the development of the project, as well as its viability ”.

The competition will distinguish the best projects of schools in the Algarve with good practices in terms of water efficiency: 11 monetary prizes will be awarded in the global amount of 100,000 euros, three for each of the categories and two honorable mentions, namely:
