The «Door-to-Door Janeiras», announcing the birth of Jesus and the coming of the Kings, are a tradition that the Cortelha Group of Janeiras will keep alive in the new year, treading sites and villages in the interior of the municipality of Loulé.
This is an initiative of the Association of Friends of Cortelha (Loulé), under the Christmas traditions, scheduled for January 4 and 5.
Door-to-Door Janeiras consist of a group of people proclaiming songs to the boy and kings, accompanied by traditional instruments (accordion, tambourine and ferrinhos) at the door of the dwellings.
“The windows mean to the people of Serra do Caldeirão, a treasure trove of traditions, bringing to mind this memory that had its beginning in the Algarve countryside,” says the Algarve association.
One of the objectives is to keep this tradition alive and for this purpose, some localities of the interior of the country, such as Cortelha, Barranco do Velho, Montes Novos, Salir, Querença, Benafim, among others, will be conducted from door to door.
“The inhabitants of this area of Serra do Caldeirão are already used to it and they expect the Cortes Janeireiros to enter the backyard to hum the announcement of the birth of Jesus, as well as the coming of the Kings. In the end, there comes out of the mouth of a daring element a 'teasing' as a way of asking or reminding the homeowner to give the group a reward, it was like that in the past and this is how the Cortelha Group keeps the tradition ”, it is described.
