On the 12th of January the village of Cortelha, in the heart of the municipality of Loulé, promotes another Walking Tour, this time the theme will be the traditional Pig Slaughter, which at this time of year is usually held a little by the Serra from the Cauldron.
In order to present the participants of another Walking Tour with the mountain traditions sometimes unknown from other places along the coast, the Association of Friends of Cortelha will recreate the Pig Slaughter, with a staging of the usual tasks that are performed today. by mountain men and women.
This tradition was in the past a very important form of subsistence for the people of the interior of the Algarve, providing food that could be stored and consumed during the year. The ritual of the "killing" was developed over several days and was part of a strong conviviality. between family and friends. In the Serra do Caldeirão these days the tradition of slaughtering the pork and the factory of tasty sausages is lived. After a year of rearing and feeding their pigs, the cold has come and in order to be able to extract their livelihoods for another year, the inhabitants of the interior of the municipality of Loulé, perform in their homes the usual pig slaughter, which more These are not days of hard work, but also of conviviality between family and friends.
So on January 12th, the usual Matança do Porco Walking Tour will be held again, where participants can be dazzled by the beautiful landscapes that Serra do Caldeirão offers at this time of year, with a course of approximately 11 km. and with the departure to be given at 09h30, but it is necessary to confirm your registration from 08h30. Along the way the pedestrians will be able to observe some of the routines that until recently were part of the daily life of the people of the Algarve mountains and at the end are all presented with a small meal of delicacies associated with the “Pig Slaughter”.
