The German Maximilian Schachmann (BORA-hansgrohe) today won the counter-clock of the first stage of the 59th Tour of the Basque Country by bicycle in Zumarraga, taking the lead in the overall individual classification.
Schachmann, 25, completed the 11.3 kilometer chrono in 17.10 minutes, beating for nine seconds the time of Daniel Felipe Martínez (Education First), second, and the 10th by the Polish Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky ), third.
The German sprinter was able to win the third victory of the season after winning the Grand Prix Industria & Artigianato in March and a stage in the Tour de Catalunya.
Rúben Guerreiro (Katusha-Alpecin) was today the best Portuguese, in 40th place, 1.03 minutes from the winner, followed by team-mate José Gonçalves, 44th, to 1.05.
Ricardo Vilela (Burgos-BH) was 93rd while Amaro Antunes (CCC) recorded the 107th best time and José Neves (Burgos-BH) finished in 126th place.
On Tuesday, the second stage of 'Itzulia' connects Zumarraga to Gorraiz at 149.5 kilometers, with a trajectory ending at the top and with several sectors of 'pavé'.
