Two best teams in the world ranking bring the main figures to the velocipedic race
Deceuninck-QuickStep and INEOS, the two best teams in the world “ranking”, will be in the 47th Tour of the Algarve, which will count a platoon of 25 teams, seven of them from WorldTour, announced today the Portuguese Cycling Federation ( FPC).
Among the formations registered in "Algarvia", which will be on the road between May 5 and 9, are, in addition to the 'stellar' Deceuninck-QuickStep, by João Almeida, and INEOS, UAE Emirates, by the Portuguese Rui Costa and Ivo and Rui Oliveira, Bora-hansgrohe, Groupama-FDJ, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux and AG2R, returning to the race after an eight-year absence.
The postponement of the Volta ao Algarve, motivated by the covid-19 pandemic, did not deprive the national public of a prestigious platoon, which will also include Burgos-BH, Caja Rural, Kern Pharma, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Delko, Arkéa-Samsic, Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB and Rally Cycling, all in the ProTeam category, the second division of world cycling.
Two Algarve teams on the road
The squad of teams is complete with the nine national continental blocks (Antarte-Feirense, Tuna General-Tavira-Maria Nova Hotel, Efapel, Kelly-Simoldes-UDO, LA Alumínios-LA Sport, Louletano-Loulé Concelho, Rádio Popular-Boavista, Tavfer-Measindot-Mortágua and W52-FC Porto) and with the "talent factory" of Hagens Berman Axeon, the gateway to international cycling for many of the Portuguese who today evolve in WorldTour, such as João Almeida, Ruben Guerreiro and the Ivo twins and Rui Oliveira
The team led by Axel Merckx presents itself in the Algarve with the two Portuguese players in the 2021 squad, Diogo Barbosa and Pedro Andrade.
Usually held in February and initially scheduled between the 17th and 21st of that month, the Volta ao Algarve had to be postponed to May, due to the covid-19 pandemic.
“In the two periods of the year, the dynamics of the teams are different in terms of calendar management and the Volta ao Algarve only had a date confirmation on the 18th of March. Despite this, the prestige achieved in previous editions allowed to attract, again, a range of high quality teams. Once again, it was not possible to welcome all the teams from the three international categories of the sport who expressed an interest in participating in the event ”, highlights the Portuguese Cycling Federation, organizer of the event, in a statement.
