The Association of Terras do Infante Municipalities, made up of the municipalities of Aljezur, Vila do Bispo and Lagos, pointed out that the withdrawal of the ENI / Galp consortium from possible oil exploration brings "social peace" to the region.
"Confirming the abandonment by the ENI / GALP consortium of what would be the first deep offshore drilling for oil exploration in the Alentejo Basin, off Aljezur, Southwest Alentejo, Costa Vicentina and all of the Algarve new social peace, normalcy and tranquility in what concerns this subject and that so shaken was and remained, "refer to the local authorities.
In a statement, signed by Maria Joaquina Matos, Lagos mayor and current president of Terras do Infante, the decision was "good and sensible", constituting the "proof of life and vitality of a region that has united around a cause to say no ".
"For the current government and for futures, it is also a learning factor for future memory. The will of a state can not be imposed on the will of a region, ignoring legal, environmental and scientific grounds, but above all the legitimate will of its populations, "he added.
The three municipalities of the windward "leave a special word of thanks" to all platforms, associations, informal groups, civil society, entrepreneurs and local authorities.
The decision was announced on Monday by Galp's president Carlos Gomes da Silva during a conference with analysts on the third quarter results of the Portuguese oil company, stressing the existence of legal constraints that impeded the execution of the drilling work located next to the Costa Vicentina.
The completion of the hole, scheduled for October, was suspended by an injunction accepted by the court, preventing the consortium from fulfilling the schedule that established the completion of this stage of the process during the year 2018.
In a statement, Galp said it will "lay the foundations for a strategic shift in its business focused on oil and natural gas to meet the new decarbonization challenges."
