The World Cup canoeing sub-23 and junior, scheduled for July at the High Performance Center (CAR) of Montemor-o-Velho, is at risk due to the “huge delay” of an opinion from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the federative president told Lusa today.
“If the construction of the arrival tower does not start this month, it will not be ready in time for the event, from 15 to 18 July. It is ‘just’ the biggest international event in our sport, which brings together two classes with 1,500 kayakers from 75 countries, ”explained the president of the Portuguese Canoeing Federation (FPC) to Lusa, Vítor Félix.
At issue is the APA's “huge delay for an opinion”, “on the possible need for an environmental impact study for the construction of that infrastructure essential to the CAR”.
"This request was made several years ago, in 2017, by the local authority to APA and, after four years, has still not received a response", he lamented.
Vítor Félix recalled that in 2018 the international federation "tolerated this failure" in the Portuguese organization, warning that it will not be repeated: "We already know it will not happen this time".
“Financing, which is usually the most difficult part, is guaranteed,” he revealed, with proportional participation by the federations using the complex, the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), the municipality and the Sports Foundation.
The FPC “was the one that most invested in the CAR, with 150,000 euros in a wind barrier” in the complex that has guaranteed maintenance through the municipality.
"If the APA continues to fail, the organization of the World Cup will be removed from us, which would be a shame for Portugal, which in recent years has established itself as a quality brand in the organization of international events", he stressed.
If this happens, Vítor Félix guarantees that “responsibilities will be asked”.
