Olympic canoeist Fernando Pimenta will seek to win on Saturday his 12th title of national champion in the background, in a 5,000 meters race to be played at the High Performance Center of Montemor-o-Velho.

During the two and a half laps on the track, the Benfica athlete will have as his main rival the sportinguista Emanuel Silva, his partner in the K2 1000 who in London2012 won the silver medal for Portugal at the Olympic Games.

Joana Vasconcelos, from Benfica, will defend her title in the women's K1, not being challenged by any of her Olympic colleagues.

In an atypical season, with Tokyo2020 postponed one year and the other major international events canceled, several athletes with a guaranteed place at the Olympic Games or with aspirations to do so chose not to participate in the nationals.

The Clube Náutico de Ponte de Lima will try to maintain, again, the scepter by teams.

In all, 817 canoeists from 45 clubs are registered.
