João Mário signed, against Varzim, the fourth goal in the 2020/2021 edition of the 2nd League. The Guinean's four goals, the home side, make this season his second best since coming to Portuguese football.
Recruited to Benfica's juniors in 2011/2012 (playing in Senegal, in Étoile Lusitana), the international for Guinea-Bissau completed his first season as a senior in Benfica B (2012/2013), having participated in 30 challenges and scored four goals. In the following season, 2013/2014, he left Benfica and signed for Atlético (competing in the 2nd League).
The season in Alcântara was, on an individual level, the best. At the age of 20, João Mário participated in 40 challenges and signed eight goals. The good performance at Atlético, which ended up dropping out of the division, aroused Desp's greed. Chaves, formation that hired him for the following season, 2015/2016.
In Trás-os-Montes he spent three years. The best season happened precisely in the debut year, with the Guinean participating in 24 challenges and scoring a goal. In the following season he made his contribution in 22 games, with a goal scored, and in 2016/2017, he only participated in 10 meetings (one goal).
