It is the first time that a Portuguese Cup final has taken place in Coimbra. But it is still the first time that it takes place outside Lisbon and Porto. “It will be a historic landmark. Whenever we talk about the Portuguese Cup, we will have to recognize that the 2020 one took place in Coimbra ”, highlights Horácio Antunes, president of the Coimbra Football Association (AFC).
The director recalls that "from the first moment" when he learned that the final could not be played in Jamor "by imposition of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS)", the AFC "presented to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) the claim to be able to apply for the Cidade de Coimbra Stadium ”, with several supporting reasons:“ we alluded to the idea that the city would be more equidistant from the city of Porto and Lisbon and, therefore, was the ideal point ”; but also “added that, due to the Academic's successes in the Portuguese Cup and the added value that this Academic represented for the Portuguese Cup, it deserved the small but just tribute that his home could be the stage of this very important game”. “Fortunately, the answer was positive”, adds the leader.
