Qatar will integrate, at the invitation of UEFA, the group A of the European qualification for the Mundial2022, in which Portugal is inserted, announced today the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on the official website.
Organizer of the next World Cup, Qatar will face Portugal, Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan, with the 10 games of the Qatari team with these five teams only serving as preparation and there will be no points in dispute.
In the five meetings in which Qatar acts as a visitor, they will be “played in European territory, to avoid long journeys”, says the FPF note.
In the qualification phase for Euro2016, France, organizer of the final phase of this event, had also been integrated into the group of Portugal, along the same lines. Portugal will face Qatar on 4 September and 9 October next year.
The national team is part of group A of the European qualification, together with Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan, dictated the draw held on Monday.
Portugal will start qualifying with the reception to Azerbaijan, on March 24, 2021, followed by trips to Serbia (27) and Luxembourg (30). In September 2021, the team from the corners receives the Republic of Ireland (01) and visits Azerbaijan (07), while in October it will host Luxembourg (12), ending the qualification in November, with the visit to the Irish (11 ) and the reception to the Serbs (14).
The European qualification for the Mundial2022 will take place between March and November 2021. The winner of each of the 10 groups will qualify directly for the final stage, while the runners-up will play in the qualification play-offs, which will be joined by two winners of League of Nations groups that fail to qualify directly for the finals or play-offs.
From these 12 teams present in the play-offs, which will be played in March 2022, the last three European representatives will leave at the World Cup2022.
The World Cup in Qatar will take place outside the usual period between June and July, due to the strong heat in that country, with the 2022 competition to be scheduled for the dates between November 21 and December 18.
