The former basketball player Ticha Penicheiro was today honored by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with the Commendation of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, as a way of recognition for his career in the sport.
On the fringes of the Sportsmen at the Palace initiative, promoted by the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa distinguished the only Portuguese athlete with a place in the WNBA 'Hall of Fame', who in 1999 had been honored by Jorge Sampaio with the rank of Official of the Order of the Infante D. Henrique.
“I remember spending many nights watching NBA games and when they started broadcasting WNBA games I remember feeling an immense joy to see a Portuguese woman among the best. I think that Ticha deserves to go up a degree in the award and this distinction is a thank you for her career and also a stimulus for yours, ”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, before more than 300 students who attended the Royal Coachyard of the National Coach Museum.
After acknowledging the “great honor” of receiving the award and revealing that the 2005 Sacramento Monarchs WNBA final was the happiest moment of sporting life, the basketball player, who finished her career in 2012, offered Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa the jersey with which he played this final.
“It is a great honor and a great surprise to receive this distinction. I am Portuguese at heart, I have never forgotten my country and being decorated by a president that I respect so much, who besides being president is an incredible human being, is a great joy ”, concluded the former basketball player.
