Vasco Ribeiro and Yolanda Hopkins won today the Allianz Figueira Pro, the second leg of the Portuguese surf league, played at Cabedelo beach, in Figueira da Foz.
The race was played in difficult sea conditions, especially on Saturday, due to the bad weather that affected the country over the weekend, but today, more consistent waves, the best of the three days of competition, have resulted in high marks.
In the men's competition, the four-time national champion Vasco Ribeiro dominated the last heat (19 points) – the highest 'score' of the competition, ending with a maximum score of 10 on his last wave, also the best of the race -, in a final unprecedented in Figueira da Foz against Guilherme Fonseca (13.05), surfer from the Sealand Santa Cruz Association.
“It was finished with the icing on the cake. The sea got better and better, it was a bit difficult to find good waves, but throughout the day I became more and more comfortable, noticing the peak and the waves I had to catch, it's done ”, said Vasco Ribeiro, in statements reproduced by the National Surfers Association (ANS).
Vasco Ribeiro, enrolled by Estoril Praia and who won all the heats in which he participated in Figueira Pro, now has 13 victories in events of the Portuguese Surf League and went on to lead the 2021 men's ‘ranking’.
“It is the first time I won here, it is always marked. It was a day of high waves and a very difficult championship ”, emphasized the surfer.
In the women's sector, the final was played by four, with Yolanda Hopkins, from Clube Naval de Portimão (national champion in 2019, the year she also won at Figueira da Foz), adding 15.25 points, overcoming Francisca Veselko (13.25), surfer from the club Lombos, from Carcavelos, who reached the second consecutive final in two disputed competitions.
In third place was still the leader of the national ‘ranking’, Carolina Mendes, (Estoril Praia), with 12.15 points, and in fourth position, Mafalda Lopes, from the Costa da Caparica Surf Association, with 4.25.
“I am very happy, I already missed competing and surfing waves like these which are the ones I like the most, I was able to do the surf that I like to do. Cabedelo beach is amazing, by chance the banks [de areia] are not as good as last year, but this last day did not make us sad with the waves, I wanted to stay there longer [de água] because the waves were really incredible, "said Yolanda Hopkins.
The next event of the Liga Meo Surf is Porto Pro, from May 7 to 9, at Matosinhos beach.
