The Portuguese pilot Duarte Benavente was crowned yesterday (Sunday, October 4, 2020) World Champion in Motor Boating in Formula 2, when he won the last race that took place in Vila Velha de Ródão.
Benavente, who occupied the 'pole position', made a 'cannon' start, giving no chance to his most direct opponent, the Lithuanian Edgaras Riabko, who occupied the second place on the grid, so that following the start the Portuguese driver soon he started gaining an advantage in relation to the Lithuanian, who was unable to get close to Benavente, who, lap after lap, was gaining ground to his most direct opponent in the motorcycling world championship.
In the first words to the press, Duarte Benavente dedicated the title of world champion to the president of the Portuguese Motorcycling Federation (FPM), Paulo Ferreira, and his family.
"Him [Paulo Ferreira] it was very important in the huge support you gave me ", said the Portuguese driver, who until yesterday was the runner-up in the world of the sport and highlighted the difficulties felt in this championship.
"This year in such a difficult championship we had to do three races in whichfour weeks, you couldn't make a mistake ", said Benavente, who added that the title won in Vila Velha de Ródão, in the district of Castelo Branco, is the culmination of a lot of work.
"Dreams are dreams, but we have our goals. The reality is that we want to fight and we always want to compete at the highest level. We have been doing it for many years. I think I did a race with my head, but at the highest level", concluded.
The president of the Portuguese Federation of Motonautics (FPM), Paulo Ferreira, visibly moved, said that this result is the culmination of the work carried out over the past two years.
"It's already here [o título mundial]. We did it, it was a lot of work. It was two years here to fight. Once again Duarte [Benavente] to prove that he is one of the best drivers in the world ", affirmed that person in charge and underlined that from now on, nothing will be as before in the motorcycle industry.
"I really hope that this title will bring even more people to the sport. Now we have to celebrate. I worked hard to have this title. It is the first time that we have a world champion. [nas classes rainhas] in Portugal. Today is a very special day for motorcycling ", concluded.
