The Swiss Anja Von Allmen and the Greek Anastasios Gkaripis became today, Friday, in Vilamoura, municipality of Loulé, the new European champions of youth in the Laser class, in a race that featured 200 sailors.
Leonor Dutra, from Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, finished the championship in 4th position in the women's competition.
In the men's classification, João Pontes, also from Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, was the national sailor with the best performance, reaching 12th place.
For a week, the waters of Vilamoura hosted this continental championship which, according to the organization, "had the peculiarity of being the only sailing competition taking place in the whole world".
The remaining competitions of the modality planned for this time of the year were canceled, all over the world, but Vilamoura Sailing, the organizing body of this European, made sure to do it taking all the recommended precautions.
“We have a lot of space, Vilamoura Marina has fantastic conditions for this type of competition. We know we have the world with our eyes on us, but we took many, many safety precautions and everything went perfectly », said Nuno Reis, in a statement.
More than 200 sailors from 18 countries fought for the European title in a competition that managed to gather the perfect conditions: wind with different intensities, small waves and mild temperature.
Portugal was represented by about 30 sailors from various clubs in the country, managing to obtain an excellent classification in the women's fleet.
