The Évora Football Association (AFE) announced yesterday the suspension of the district football and futsal championships, with immediate effects and until the end of this month, due to the increase in cases of the new coronavirus in the region.
In a statement, AFE indicated that the decision was taken at a meeting of the association's management, held yesterday afternoon, in which “the worsening of the pandemic situation in the country in general and in the district in particular” was analyzed.
“From the analysis carried out, there is also a worsening of cases in the affiliates that compete in our district championships”, stressed the AFE, indicating that the situation will be reassessed at the end of this month.
This decision was made after seven mayors of Évora district councils demanded the “urgent suspension” of the championships organized by this football association, due to the “unprecedented escalation” of cases of the new coronavirus that causes the disease of covid- 19.
The requirement is contained in a letter, which the Lusa agency had access to, subscribed by the mayors of Alandroal, Mourão, Portel, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Vendas Novas and Viana do Alentejo and sent by email to AFE.
The seven mayors asked the district public health delegate for an opinion, to which Lusa also had access, in which the official considers that “the movements of groups of athletes and the public, the resulting contacts and those associated with the practice of the sport constitute risk factor that should be avoided ”.
Portugal accounts for at least 7,472 deaths associated with covid-19 in 456,533 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
