Facebook is developing a voice assistant that wants to compete with competitors like Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri or Google Assistant. According to CNBC, the team responsible for the augmented and virtual reality department of the social network has been working on the project since 2018.
This department of Mark Zuckerberg's team team is already in contact with suppliers of smart speakers, in order to establish partnerships related to the devices that will be equipped with the new assistant.
A representative of the American company told Reuters that the main focus of the voice assistant and Artificial Intelligence will be on its range of augmented and virtual reality products, including Portal (which has been using Amazon Alexa), Oculus or other new projects that will be developed in the same area.
This is not the first time Facebook has developed Artificial Intelligence wizards, but the truth is that it has never been able to get close to the success of Amazon or Google, who hold, respectively, 67% and 30% share of the market for smart columns in the United States. In 2015, the social network created for its Messenger app an assistant named M. However, the project never avenged, having been canceled in 2018.
