The Municipality of Faro approved the new school transport plan for the academic year 2020/2021, which provides for free for all students, in an investment of more than 491 thousand euros.
“This municipal plan, which represents a total investment by the municipality of 491,642.77 euros, provides free transportation for all students at all levels of education residing more than 3 kilometers from the school they attend”, announced the autarchy, in a statement.
This measure has been implemented by the municipality since the beginning of this year in order to ensure and promote equal opportunities for access to education among students in public schools in the municipality.
Before that, free transportation was limited to primary school students and secondary school students were awarded a share of only 50 percent of the value of travel.
The implementation of this plan includes public land careers, public river careers and a special river circuit, which also allow travel for students residing in the housing units of Ilha da Culatra.
For this purpose, a budget of 98,877.87 euros will be allocated in the next academic year (public river careers in the amount of 37,380 euros and a special river circuit of 61,497.87 euros).
Also included in this municipal school transport regime are all students with mobility difficulties who benefit from measures under inclusive education, regardless of the distance from their residence to the educational establishment, whenever their condition requires it.
In total, between river and land transport, the municipality will allocate a total amount of 491,642.77 euros to school transport in the next school year (160,414.29 euros in 2020 and 331,228.48 euros in 2021).
With this set of measures, the executive led by Rogério Bacalhau seeks to “facilitate access to education for the population of the municipality, while intending to encourage the use of public transport, to the detriment of individual transport, contributing to the formation of future habits and environmentally sustainable practices ”.
