A 10th year student at Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School in Faro died today following a car accident in Hungary, where she was visiting the Erasmus + program: Comenius.
The accident occurred at dawn, around 4:00 am local time, when the minibus with the farense entourage – six students and two female teachers -, who had left Romania and was heading for the Budapest airport, was struck by a truck.
In addition to the student who died, the accident caused another wounded, another male student and the 10th year who had to be hospitalized with a fractured collarbone.
Psychological support was provided to the students' families and to the school community in general, according to the Ministry of Education, which in a statement lamented the passing away of Farense.
The Portuguese embassy in Hungary is carrying out the necessary steps with the authorities of that country, and is accompanying the students and teachers involved in the accident.
The Faro City Council also expressed its regret over the accident. "For misfortune of destiny, a young and promising farense life was interrupted," it said in a statement.
All school activities in the Pinheiro and Rosa Grouping schools are interrupted until Monday, 13.
