Participants in the League of Nations and European Supercup are exempt from IRS and IRC as of Wednesday, according to the fiscal regime of the competitions UEFA Champions League Finals 2019 and UEFA Super Cup Final 2020 published today.
The law published today in Diário da Republica, to come into force the following day, exempt from taxes only those entities that are not considered resident in Portuguese territory.
The new tax regime applies to the organizers of the UEFA European Football Association (UEFA) Nations League Finals 2019 and UEFA Super Cup Final 2020 competitions, as well as to country associations and sports clubs, their players and technical teams.
"The income relating to the organization and conduct of the UEFA Champions League Finals 2019 and UEFA Super Cup Final 2020 events are exempt from Individual Income Tax (IRC) and Personal Income Tax (IRS)", if not in the diploma.
Tax-exempt income from participation in sporting events shall be earned by the organizers of the finals, their representatives and officials, as well as by country associations and football clubs, their respective sportsmen and technical teams, namely coaches, medical and private security teams and other support staff,
The diploma was promulgated on Thursday by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who wrote on the official website of the Presidency on "the difficulty in explaining to citizens a tax exemption for an activity that, in principle, generates appreciable income" but that, "in the case of an international commitment of the Portuguese State," promulgates the diploma.
This tax exemption proposed by the Government was approved on May 10 by the parliament, with the favorable votes of the PS and the abstention of the remaining seats, explaining the Secretary of State for Fiscal Affairs, António Mendonça Mendes, in the plenary debate, that the objective of measure is to avoid double taxation of income earned by non-residents and to create an additional guarantee against double taxation agreements.
The 2019 Nations League finals take place between June 05 and 09, at Estádio do Dragão in Oporto, and at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimarães, while the final of the European Super Cup 2020 is scheduled for August 12, 2020 at the Stadium of the Dragon.
