Find out where it is more expensive and cheaper to rent a house in Portugal - The Economic Journal

Renting a house in Portugal has an average cost of 4.80 euros per square meter (m2), according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), released today, but prices vary greatly from region to region. Of the 197 municipalities for which data are available, 33 show an average value of incomes higher than the national benchmark. This means that in these regions the price per square meter exceeded the level of 4.80 euros.

The INE data show that, without surprises, the Lisbon area was the one that presented the highest income in the second half of 2018: 11.16 euros, on average, per m2. Renting a house in the capital costs up to seven times more than in the cheapest area of the country – Belmonte – where one square meter costs, on average, 1.70 euros.

To complete the podium of the most expensive places to rent house in the country are Cascais and Oeiras, with average prices of 9.71 euros per m2 and 9.38 euros per m2, respectively. Meanwhile, Porto has 63% higher incomes than the rest of the country, with average values of 7.85 euros per square meter, less 3.31 euros than in Lisbon.
