Forest fire risk keeps country on alert until Monday - Diario diariOnline Região Sul

The significant worsening of the risk of forest fires in mainland Portugal, in the face of weather forecasts, will keep the country on alert until next Monday, May 3, the government announced.

The Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development signed today the order that determines the Statement of the Alert Situation, which had already been activated last week and is now extended in the period between 11:59 pm on May 30 and at 23:59 on June 3, 2019.

The declaration is derived from information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) on the predicted meteorological conditions for the country; the fact that the Forest Fire Risk Index – FWI, calculated and made available by IPMA, is high or very high for the next five days; the passage from several districts to the Special Yellow Alert and Special Orange Alert states of their Special Devices to Combat Rural Fire (in the Algarve, the alert is Orange) and the need to adopt preventive and special measures of reaction to the risk of fire.

The exceptional measures under the Alert Situation are the increase of the level of readiness and operational response by the GNR and the PSP, with a reinforcement of means for operations of surveillance, surveillance, behavior-deterrent patrolling and general support for operations protection and relief that may be triggered; prohibition of burning and burning of leftovers; the dismissal of workers from the public and private sectors who perform cumulatively the duties of voluntary firefighters; the issuance of warning to the population by the National Authority of Emergency and Civil Protection on the danger of rural fire; requesting the Air Force, through the Ministry of National Defense, to make available air resources to, if necessary, be operational; and the immediate activation of territorially competent institutional coordination structures.
