Gastão Elias, 379th in the world "ranking", added the seventh victory in seven meetings held this year
Gastão Elias and Pedro Araújo qualified today, Thursday, for the quarter-finals of the main group of singles from Vale do Lobo Open Magnesium-K Active.
The $ 25,000 ITF tournament, which Premier Sports organizes with the support of the Portuguese Tennis Federation, runs until Sunday at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy.
Number 379 of the ATP ranking, Gastão Elias scored his seventh victory in seven matches this year (in the first tournament he was crowned champion in Vilhena, Spain) by applying the 6-1 and 7-6 partials over the qualifier Austrian Maximilian Neuchrist (653rd).
The match could even have been resolved earlier, given that the former "top-60" ATP led 5-2 in the second match, but Elias was unable to hold the advantage and shortly after the rain interrupted the duel.
In the resumption, already recomposed, the 30-year-old Portuguese was practically irreproachable and sealed the victory in the second set set.
For the quarter-finals also followed the young Pedro Araújo, who again won to achieve the best result of his career in tournaments on the international circuit – and soon in a $ 25,000 event.
The Lisboner, the current national under-18 champion, was practically faultless in the duel with the French qualifier Vincent Stouff (1086º), who won 6-1 and 6-3 in just 1.27 hours.
In the quarter-finals, Pedro Araújo will face Lucas Poullain, who beat Max Andrews 6-1 and 7-6, while Gastão Elias will face Slovenian Tomas Lipovsek Puches (616), who surprised his first favorite, Maxime Hamou (362º), by 6-0, 1-6 and 6-4.
The remaining places in the quarter-finals of the Vale do Lobo Open Magnesium-K Active were filled by the Mexican Luis Patino and the French Evan Furness, Antoine Escoffier and Kenny de Schepper.
To close the day, Gonçalo Falcão extended the Portuguese representation in the doubles variant, thanks to a 7-5 and 7-6 triumph alongside Tomas Lipovsek Puches, with whom he defeated Luchas Gerch and Peter Goldsteiner to reach the semi-finals. Following is the duo formed by Alen Avidzba / Kristjan Tamm.
