Coach Eusebio Sacristán has resigned today from his contract with Girona, said the Catalan club, who went down to the second division of Spanish football.
"We appreciate the implementation and commitment of the coach and his coaching staff at all times, even though we have missed the goal of staying. We wish him the best of luck, "the club wrote.
Sacristán fulfilled only the first two-year contract, in which he led the team for the first time to the quarter-finals of the King's Cup away from Atletico Madrid.
In spite of the lack of sport, Girona were, along with Betis, the only team to score in Camp Nou, home of champion FC Barcelona, and in the Bernabeu of the European champions Real Madrid.
On the first lap, the team came close to the Europa League places, but a disastrous second lap – a victory and nine defeats in the last 10 games – took the team to the bottom of the last.
Girona was more than half a year without winning at home and eventually down, along with Huesca and Rayo Vallecano.
