The GNR Olhão Coastal Control substation seized today, Monday, 9th, at Faro's commercial pier, more than 1,700 kilograms of illegally captured cockles.
Following an enforcement action to control fisheries and protect marine resources, the military detected a vessel catching cockles at night outside the legally fixed daily period.
Apart from the offense committed, none of the offenders had a fishing license to pursue the catching activity.
This action resulted in the identification of two 44- and 50-year-old men, and the respective notices were prepared for breach, whose fines could reach 50 thousand euros for lack of fishing license and 25 thousand euros for capture outside the allowed period.
The cockle, still alive, was returned to its natural habitat.
