The Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, António Mendonça Mendes, today ordered the cancellation of a joint inspection by the Tax and Customs Authority and the GNR to drivers in Alfena, Valongo, seeking the collection of tax debts.
The indication of this cancellation was forwarded to Lusa by an official source of the Ministry of Finance, who added that said action was not defined centrally by the Tax and Customs Authority (TA).
About 20 elements of the TA and 10 of the GNR promoted during the morning of today an action of control of drivers, aiming at the collection of fiscal debts.
According to Lusa, the source of the TA, the initiative, called "Action on Wheels", involves "intercepting drivers with debts to Finance, inviting them to pay and giving them the opportunity to pay."
"If they can not afford to pay at the moment, we are able to pawn the vehicles," he said.
The control of the debtors is being done through a computer system, which is set up in tables in tents placed in the roundabout of Freeway 42 (A42), exit of Alfena, district of Porto.
The computer system crosses data through vehicle registrations and compares them with the existence of tax debts, he explained.
In response to Lusa, the Ministry of Finance also said that the framework "in which its Finance Directorate has defined this action is being verified."
"The guidelines in TA are for proportional action," said the Ministry of Finance, stressing that "there are now mechanisms for electronic attachment," which can be triggered in case of debt.
The operation started at 08:00 and is expected to run until 13:00.
