The Government will decide today, in the Council of Ministers, the closure of all educational establishments, from basic to higher education, with effect from Friday, the executive's source told Lusa.
"The information that the Government received on Wednesday, after meeting with epidemiologists, was considered very relevant and decisive for the decision, taking into account the growth of the British variant of the new coronavirus in Portugal," said the same source.
With this measure, the main objective of the Government, "is to isolate the entire school system", since, "with no classes, people are not forced to leave the house".
The details of the measures to tighten the general confinement will be communicated today at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting.
On Wednesday night, in a message he posted on social media, the Prime Minister said that the Government will analyze on Thursday information about the "alarming progression" of the epidemic in Portugal, namely the growth of the British variant of the new coronavirus, and "will decide accordingly" to "save lives".
"We will meet the Council of Ministers, analyze all this information and decide accordingly, with the certainty that our priority is to save lives and control the pandemic" wrote António Costa.
Also this evening, in an interview with RTP, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, admitted that the Government may aggravate already on Thursday the measures to combat covid-19, with the closure of schools on the table.
Asked if "on the table was the possibility of closing schools immediately," the minister of health replied that "yes".
According to Marta Temido, Wednesday's meeting with epidemiologists brought "some changes" to previous estimates, which "will force new reflections on measures to be taken" to control the covid-19 pandemic.
"These measures that were agreed between some ministers as possible, tomorrow [quinta-feira] will be discussed in the Council of Ministers and then will be transmitted by the Prime Minister to the Portuguese, "said Marta Temido.
