The Ginásio Olhanense is one of three teams eligible to compete in the tournament to qualify for the Placard League, in basketball, scheduled for September, in the next pre-season of the sport, announced the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FPB).
“In view of the impossibility, for public health reasons, to play any more games in the 2019/2020 season, an opportunity should be given to the teams that were placed at the top of the respective competitions and, therefore, with aspirations to move up the division”, explained the FPB in a statement.
The Olhão team, which occupied 3rd place in Proliga (second national level), will have the company CD Póvoa e Académica de Coimbra, in case the three teams confirm their registration, on an optional basis, by the end of June. The winner of this tournament will guarantee the ascent.
Remember, the Immortal Basket had already secured 1st place in the regular phase of Proliga, guaranteeing the promotion to the top echelon of national basketball in spite of the suspension of the competition due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pre-season qualifying tournaments will also involve Imortal B and CB Albufeira – in the struggle to rise to Division I (third step) – and the female team of Immortal, discussing the promotion to Division I (second step).
The pre-season qualifiers, scheduled for September (calendar that is subject to the evolution of the pandemic), will always end at least two weeks before the start of the national championships of 2020/2021.
