O International Olympic Committee (IOC) today warned the Italian committee for one bill which may undermine the autonomy of the body and, if approved, dictate the exclusion of the country from Olympic competitions.
In a letter, issued on Tuesday by the Corriere de la Serra newspaper, the IOC reminds the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) that "belonging to the Olympic movement requires compliance with the Olympic Charter."
At issue is an article of the bill that proposes that the CONI could be "reorganized by unilateral government decisions."
The IOC recalls that the Olympic Charter authorizes its Executive Council to make appropriate decisions, including suspension, "for the protection of the Olympic movement in the country of a member state."
This warning comes less than two months after the Milan / Cortina d´Ampezzo application was chosen to host the 2026 Winter Olympics.
