It was 40 years ago last March 6, that the then deputy to the Assembly of the Republic elected by the Algarve circle, José Vitorino, today president of ALGFUTURO – União Empresarial do Algarve, presented a proposal for water abstraction in the Guadiana River ( Pomarão), directing it to the Odeleite Dam, whose work will, according to the Government, be carried out soon and help fill the lack of water in the Algarve.
In order to mark the date and clarify some points, especially as a four-decade wait is explained, exclusively to the diariOnline South Region newspaper, José Vitorino started by saying that “It is with joy and satisfaction that a small part of a vast set of proposals that I made at the time of the Assembly of the Republic was finally implemented…”
Reflecting on some issues inherent to the problem of water shortages in the Algarve, the president of ALGFUTURO stated that “Let's see if we understand each other and we don't want to treat each other like kids. The population may have responsibility, the State has responsibility, it is assumed, we are going to fight losses, we are going to make a new path, we are going to spend as little as possible, but don't just come and make a speech that if they don't make it impossible, I don't know how many hectares of irrigation, that this is chaos and the Sahara desert is coming to settle here in the Algarve. ”
"It takes common sense, thoughtfulness, that each one of us assume the part of the errors we have, without moralistic speeches and without radicalism, whatever part it is," finished.
