He passed away yesterday, at 59, victim of a prolonged illness, João Luiz Bigotte de Almeida. Son of Egyptians, the former president of Basketball Section of the Academic Association of Coimbra (SB / AAC) was born in Coimbra, on May 30, 1961.
He did swimming at Académica, then athletics at Académica, U. Coimbra and Santa Clara, among others.
His career in sports also led him to rugby, already in veterans, "challenged by some friends" who practiced the sport, admitted to DIÁRIO AS BEIRAS, in an interview in August 2013.
But, in his sports career, it was basketball that “captivated” him, he admitted, in that interview, days after accepting the challenge of giving new direction to an SB / AAC that had become national vice-champion, defeated in the fourth game of the final against Benfica, but that had fallen into a financial hole that even led to the senior team's withdrawal that year.
“I started at Clube Académico de Coimbra and I was part of the team that, in youth, won three consecutive national championships. From the youth we went directly to the seniors and we also disputed the climb to the 1st Division with Ovarense ”, he recalled.
