The Kings' Grand Prix in athletics, which was scheduled for Saturday, 9th, at the Athletics Track in Faro, was canceled due to new restrictions on circulation announced on Thursday by the government.
"The municipality of Faro informs that, given the new restrictions announced this Thursday by the Council of Ministers, the organization has decided to cancel the 51st edition of the Grand Prix of the Kings", says the municipality, in a statement.
Due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the organization had prepared a special edition of this emblematic event of national athletics, entirely on track and limited to athletes affiliated with the Algarve Athletics Association, instead of the traditional model that usually brings together federated and social athletes from all ages on the streets of downtown Faro.
However, in view of the measures announced this Thursday by the government that impose restrictions on movement between municipalities and as of 1 pm during the weekend in most municipalities in the region, the organizing entities (Faro municipality and Athletics of the Algarve, with the support of Fagar) understood “the conditions for the realization of this event are not met, even if in a more restrained than usual format and with a contingency plan for the Algarve Athletics Association previously approved by the authorities of health".
The municipality of Faro reinforces that it has been “concerned with trying to maintain sport activity in the municipality as much as possible”, but believes that, at this moment, “it is of fundamental importance to safeguard the health and condition of the athletes and the entire community generally".
