The Lacobrigense municipal executive unanimously approved a vote of condolence in memory of João Cutileiro, an artist who left his unmistakable mark on the public space of the city of Lagos.
The sculptor was remembered as a «striking figure in the Portuguese artistic panorama (…) who lived in our city in the 70s and 80s, and his contribution to public art today still dignifies and magnifies Lagos. Anyone who strolls through our streets is not indifferent to the irreverence of works such as “Venus Deitada”, in Rua Portas de Portugal or the Triptych alluding to Alcácer Quibir and “Lagos and the Sea”, located in the Jardim da Constitution. But it is the essential statue of El Rei D. Sebastião located in Praça Gil Eanes that strongly marks the presence of this artist in our municipality, a true symbol of Lagos that challenged the Estado Novo and the conventionalities of sculpture in Portugal ».
João Cutileiro died on January 5, following respiratory problems, "but leave his work: irreverent, powerful and eternal", according to the camera. A work that, according to Hugo Pereira, president of the municipality, "will be the pretext for a set of cultural initiatives to be promoted by the municipality during the current year".
